Preparing For Your Engagement Session | Part 1 | Tips for Jess Brides

Wedding Tips

Today’s blog post marks the first installment of our “Ultimate 5 Part Series on Preparing For Your Engagement Session”! Through this series, we will discuss the Do’s and Dont’s of anything you can think of related to this monumental day in your lives! Whether it is what you should or shouldn’t wear, when you should have your engagement session, who (or what you should bring), these lessons will be SO worth learning! I teach and advise all of my couples these lessons and they have never regretted applying them to their engagement sessions.

To start off, today we will learn how to prepare for your engagement session by discussing who (or what) you should bring to your engagement session! This is one of those common questions I always get and I LOVE the answer I give! There are multiple answers, but you can usually find the ONE that is a perfect fit for you.

– If you have ever wondered about bringing props to your engagement session, you are not alone! I LOVE props. As long as they are relevant to the couple. You should bring props that represent your relationship rather than something to fill empty space. If there is a certain team that you love and you want to incorporate, bring a shirt or symbol of that team! If you’re obsessed with Pitch Perfect as much as I am, feel free to bring your best “Fat Amy” impression – I will love you forever. But seriously, incorporating props into your session helps tie a story to you and it makes for a more fun engagement session!!

– If you have ever wondered if bringing a friend or family member along just because, this is probably not the best idea just because this session is all about the two of you and to celebrate the love you have for each other. Sometimes, it even makes it a lot more awkward when there is someone in the background cheering you on or constantly telling you what’s wrong or what to fix. That can make you uncomfortable and even ruin the experience! So let’s make sure we focus on each other and not the rest of the world for just this one day!

– If you have a child and are interested bringing them along, that is a WONDERFUL idea!! Your engagement is all about your family that you are starting together, so why not celebrate that with the little ones?! The one tip I insist on when bringing children to engagement sessions is to have a close friend or family member with you who works well with the little one so they can be entertained when it is “Mommy and Daddy’s turn” for pictures!

There are SO many other things that you may consider bringing to an engagement session and I am always up for questions, so feel free to ask away either by email or in the comments below!

These are really great tips on preparing for an engagement session! I especially love that you mentioned leaving the parents and friends at home. Including mom and bringing her along always sounds like a sweet idea – but it makes it so awkward for the more intimate moments of the session! I can’t wait to see the rest of the tips in this series! Great idea!
