To this day, I still remember the exact moment that Megan and Ben sent along their inquiry into my inbox. Ding! I opened it up, excited to hear about the newly engaged couple! As soon as I read the words “met in high school” and “10 years later, we’re engaged”, I got so giddy!! I absolutely ADORE a good love story and boy, do they have one! Megan and Ben met in high school y’all. How sweet is that?! I absolutely love high school sweethearts because it’s something that Colby and I can relate to so well. Not all high school relationships last, but the ones that do – those are the great ones. One of the coolest parts to me was that they met their very first day of high school in their first period English class! Like, what are the odds?! They were only friends at first, but began dating soon enough. Later on in life when their parents were all together for a triva night, they all realized that Megan and Ben had taken swimming lessons when they were 7 years old together. SO funny! Megan went to the University of Mary Washington as well so it’s always fun getting to photograph an alumni wedding!
Later on in life, Ben eventually moved outside of New York City for his dream job and that is when they started their long distance relationship. One day, Megan went to the train station and went inside instead of waiting in her car to pick Ben up! He was so surprised and was apparently acting funny! They ventured on over to Fiola (an Italian restaurant near the National Mall) and walked over to the National Mall on their way to Old Ebbit Grill. They kept going and made it all the way to the Washington Monument! For those of you who aren’t local, this isn’t a short walk, haha! The view at the Washington at night is so gorgeous – you can see the Lincoln, the Capital, and the Rossyln Skyline. They had the entire monument to themselves!!! Ben got down on one knee out of nowhere and popped the question! Megan was so excited that she didn’t even look at her ring for an hour and a half, haha! Of course, Megan said yes… which brings us to their wedding day!
As soon as Megan completed her wedding day questionnaire, I did a little leap for joy! Seriously y’all, the team of vendors who she put together for her wedding day was absolutely phenomenal! You’ve GOT to check them all out at the end of this post!! The craziest part of all?! Megan planned the whole wedding herself – she had no planner and there was so much thought put into every aspect of the day. When I arrived, I found Bobby Pins and Blush upstairs finishing up Megan’s hair and makeup! I was so excited to see them in action again, especially since they’re doing my wedding this Fall! Eek!! The florals were all laid out from Good Earth Flowers. Tammy did a killer job as always and ALL of the girls even had flower crowns!! Dream come true!! I got to work styling details and I was just so obsessed with the light on the porch of the girl’s room. It was just so amazing! The invitation suite by Perfectly Invited was perfect for their theme and I’m really digging the new “pocket” trend of invitation suites lately! Her Badgley Mischka shoes had such intricate detail and beading – I just couldn’t get enough of them. One of my favorite parts of shooting details is getting to see the dress and oh my gosh – just wait until you see Megan’s gorgeous dress along with her girls’ beautiful gowns!! Your jaw will be on the floor.
We got Megan into her dress and her sweet sister assisted her to help put on her shoes and then mom finished up zipping up her gorgeous gown! The light was so incredible – we just had to take a few bridal portraits before the daddy/daughter first look! When Megan descended the stairs, her father lit up so bright. His baby girl is all grown up now!! After they had some sweet and sentimental tears and hugs, we got Ben ready to see his almost-wife!! I can’t even explain the excitement that both of them were feeling, but you can see for yourself in their first look photos! His reaction is so sweet! After we finished the first look, we took some jaw-dropping bride and groom photos and had to get that dress fluff picture. How could we not with Megan’s dress?! And just look at the look on her face when we did it – she was such a princess!! Wedding party photos followed and then it was time for the ceremony!
The ceremony site was all dolled up with a cute little hanging flower wall and gorgeous drapery! I was in heaven. Oh, and the light was just pretty much amazing!! Guests watched as Megan and Ben said their vows and promised a lifetime together. It was a moment we’ve all been waiting for. It’s been 10 years y’all – it was time!! 🙂 They had the sweetest first kiss and exit of their ceremony which led straight into family formals and then so much fun at cocktail hour! They had fun little games set up on the lawn like Jenga and corn hole! We took a few more bride and groom portraits before the reception started and it was so worth it! How could you pass up portraits in front of that gorgeous house?!
Y’all, I wasn’t joking when I said that Megan put a lot of detail and planning into this day. There were these adorable little lanterns hanging on the windows, the centerpieces were put together just perfectly, and she even rented gorgeous lounge chairs and sofas for the dancefloor outside for guests to sit down and take a break! My favorite was the big pink sofa from Paisley and Jade!! Oh, and the CAKE and cupcakes!!! Favorite Cakes, y’all KILLED it!! They had SO many different flavor cupcakes, all with the yummiest filling inside. Megan even had these apple desserts that had the recipes for them right next to them! If you know me, you know how much I love dessert so you know what’s sitting in my recipe book now. 🙂
Megan and Ben had their entrances and then we all ate dinner – Kristina and I even got to sit at the table right by the cake with a few new friends! Dinner was amazing and one of my favorite parts was the vegetable dish – it was tangy so it was like a vegetable salad, but SO good! Perfect for summer. Toasts followed dinner and then we cut the cake and ran outside to get some sunset portraits up at the overlook. We almost passed on the opportunity, but I’m SO glad we didn’t!! Y’all, just LOOK at that sunset!! All the heart eye emojis. When we came back, they had their first dance and we partied the night away the rest of the evening! It was honestly such a wonderful day and the best day ever. I’m so happy for you two, Megan and Ben. I hope you’re having so much fun in Santorini, Greece!!
